Many toxicology samples compromised due to poor storage now threaten criminal investigations.

These delays create a justice bottleneck. Cases involving digital evidence, narcotics, or violent crimes sit on ice as trials stall. The Supreme Court voiced deep concern over the chronic lack of forensic infrastructure nationwide. Courts also criticize unnecessary referrals that bog down labs. Without modernization or standard operating procedures, the forensic system inches forward while justice slips away.

A Glimmer in Jammu and Kashmir

One bright spot appears in Jammu and Kashmir, where their Forensic Science Laboratory revamped its operations. In 2023 alone, the lab completed 15,000 cases—a 315% increase over 2021. They eliminated the backlog of narcotic cases and now report most findings within a week. Investments in staff, partnerships with forensic universities, and renewed infrastructure powered this turnaround.

Why This Backlog Hurts Everyone

I feel frustrated when I think about how victims wait years for closure while evidence degrades. Innocent people stay in jail, and guilty ones linger free. Courts stall when forensic labs falter, and that chips away at confidence in legal systems. We need solutions that root out delay, not paper over it with temporary fixes.

J&K’s success shows that forensic systems can be fixed with will and investment. But the rest of the country needs that same energy. We must demand more labs, skilled staff, modern tools, and rigorous oversight. Justice depends on science that works.
