Police-Protester Clashes Mark RG Kar Crime Anniversary March

On August 9, doctors, students, and activists held protests across Kolkata and Howrah to mark the RG Kar crime anniversary. The demonstrations came one year after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front organised torchlight processions and campus memorial events.

March to Nabanna Blocked
Protesters began the “Nabanna Abhiyan” march in the afternoon. They moved towards the state secretariat in Howrah. Police placed iron barricades up to 10 feet high at several points. Officers stopped protesters at Park Street, Santragachhi, and Howrah Maidan. Organisers said the march was a key part of the RG Kar crime anniversary protests.

Tensions Rise at Santragachhi
The victim’s parents joined the protest march. At Santragachhi, they tried to move past a barricade. Police blocked their way. Both sides pushed against each other. The mother later said police shoved her to the ground and broke her bangles. She showed bruises on her hands and forehead. The father accused police of following them from their home.

Police Respond to Allegations
Kolkata Police denied using force against the parents. They said early video checks showed no such incident. They assured they will review all footage for confirmation.

Protests to Continue
Junior doctors pledged to continue their agitation. They said they will press for a broader probe into the crime. Protesters claim the case involves more people than those convicted so far. They also accuse the authorities of failing to protect the victim last year. Many participants said the RG Kar crime anniversary is a reminder of the need for sustained public pressure.
