Haryana Murder Convict Arrested For Cyber Fraud In Lucknow

On August 9, 2025, Lucknow police arrested Rahul Lakhera, a 28-year-old former convict in a 2019 murder case from Haryana. Authorities discovered that after serving four years in prison, he orchestrated cyber fraud with an associate, Vikas Kumar, from a makeshift call centre in South Delhi. That illegal operation targeted victims by sending malicious Android apps that granted remote access to their phones. They stole OTPs and credit card information to place fraudulent orders, mainly mobile phones, which they later sold in the grey market.

From Conviction to Cybercrime

Rahul returned from prison equipped not with reform but with a new criminal blueprint. He learned the ropes of cybercrime behind bars from a notorious cybercriminal known as Nawab Khan, who remains at large. That mentorship transformed him from inmate to exploiter. Investigators found that Vikas’s home became the operation’s nerve centre. They both hired personnel to act as fake bank officials, cold-calling unsuspecting victims to install malicious apps.

These fraudsters manipulated people’s trust and technology with equal ease. Once phones fell under their control, stolen data went for as little as ten rupees per person. That data turned into big money through mobile theft and resale in grey markets. The police broke the racket only after a victim lost Rs 1.6 lakh and pressed charges at Sarojininagar police station. This case reveals how cybercriminals exploit gaps in technology awareness and regulatory speed.

System Gaps Demand Smart Responses

This crime highlights how prisons can incubate new threats instead of reforming offenders. Authorities must reassess how they monitor individuals post-release. We also need stronger cyber monitoring, proactive digital literacy, and swift justice. Cyber regulations should penalize not just fraudsters but intermediaries enabling them. Protecting citizens from digital predators requires prevention and penalties that carry real consequences.
