India Draws the Line as US Tariffs Hit Exports
New Delhi | August 2, 2025:
The United States has imposed 25% tariffs on several Indian exports through an executive order signed by President Donald Trump. The move is seen as part of escalating trade tensions. The tariffs take effect from August 7, 2025.However, there’s a brief window of relief: shipments in transit before August 7 and reaching US ports by October 5 will be exempt.
Indiaโs Response: โNon-Negotiable Zonesโ
India has made it clear it will not compromise on certain areas:
Farm and dairy productsGenetically modified food items
Beef and animal feed containing meat
Officials have stated that these are cultural and agricultural red lines, and Indiaโs farmer interests will come first in trade negotiations.
โNo pressure will override national interest,โ a senior official said.
Economic Impact
According to government estimates:
The GDP impact could be around 0.2% this fiscal year
Out of $86.5 billion in total exports to the US in FY2024โ25, about $20โ25 billion worth of goods are outside the tariff zone

Pharmaceuticals
Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs)
Electronics and ICT products
Smartphones, semiconductors, computers
Energy products (like refined oil)
Exporters Seek Relief
Industries such as textiles, chemicals, and footwear are expected to be the hardest hit. Exporters are calling for government support and policy interventions to manage potential losses.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to hold consultations with stakeholders this week.
