Voter Fraud Scandal Rocks West Bengal’s Electoral Integrity

West Bengal’s election officials discovered 127 fictitious voter entries during a sample audit in South and North 24 Parganas. These names were allegedly added without verification by Booth Level Officers and with assistance from two Electoral Registration Officers. The Chief Electoral Officer has ordered an official probe into the irregularities.

Political Blame Game

Opposition leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, claim the voter roll issue extends far beyond 127 names. Adhikari alleges that up to 1.25 crore fake voters, many of whom are purportedly Rohingya or Bangladeshi nationals, have been added to the registers. He demands a CBI investigation and strict scrutiny of all new registrations. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of manipulating voter rolls similar to tactics used in other states. She pressed the Election Commission to ensure no genuine voter is removed while urging fair treatment during roll revisions.

The Stance of Election Commission

To combat the irregularities, the Chief Electoral Officer has instructed all district magistrates to submit audited reports on entries made over the past year. These reports are due by August 14. The Commission has already canceled 7,800 EPIC cards and suspended a postal officer in South 24 Parganas for misconduct. This move signals enforcement action tied to tampered records.

Field investigations revealed alarming anomalies. In Champahati Panchayat alone, nearly 4,500 suspicious voter names appeared, many linked to phone numbers in Malda, Murshidabad, or Siliguri cybercafés. Residents also found that the names of deceased individuals were still registered. These discoveries underline how deeply enforcement gaps erode confidence in electoral rolls across constituencies.

The revised voter count in West Bengal has increased to 7.6 crore, nearly doubling in the past two decades. Authorities must now prove that such rapid growth reflects genuine updates, not manipulation informed by identity fraud or administrative error. If electoral revision replaces trust with suspicion, democracy itself suffers.

A Critical Moment for Voter Rights and Electoral Trust

By exposing fake entries, election officials have shown accountability in principle. Yet political finger-pointing and delayed verification fuel voter distrust. West Bengal must act swiftly—not only to audit and clean voter lists, but also to hold violators accountable and educate voters about their rights.

This scandal must become more than political fodder; it demands systemic reform in how rolls are maintained and verified. Without that change, every election risks legitimacy, and when people lose faith in the system, even democracy itself begins to unravel.
