Trafficking Syndicates Exposed In Nagpur During Operation Shakti

Nagpur Police kicked off Operation Shakti in late July 2025, targeting human trafficking rings across the city. Under Commissioner Ravindra Kumar Singal’s leadership, authorities rescued 42 women, including 8 minors, and arrested 44 suspects. They also filed 24 FIRs involving locations from lodges and spas to highways identified as trafficking hotspots. Investigators uncovered illegal operations masked as legitimate businesses.

New Tools for Surveillance and Victim Support

The police, in partnership with the District Action Group, set up 22 facial recognition cameras in high-risk areas and established help desks at all 33 police stations. Mobile units operate 24×7 at bus stands in Cotton Market and Ganeshpeth. Authorities unveiled two standard operating procedures: one for digital crime scene handling and the other to monitor private premises that may facilitate trafficking. These steps reflect an emerging strategy to combine technology with legal empowerment.

Further Investigation and Raids

Under Operation Shakti, Crime Branch’s Social Security Branch raided a salon in Gondwana Square masquerading as a front for trafficking. Officers rescued five women—some allegedly coerced into prostitution—and arrested two individuals. The case underlined the use of everyday businesses as covers for exploitation and pushed authorities to probe connections to broader trafficking syndicates.

Investigators discovered traffickers exploited forged Aadhaar cards to pass off minors as adults. This tactic enabled abusers to operate outside legal protection for children. In several cases, underage girls from Rajasthan, West Bengal, or Madhya Pradesh appeared legally as adults due to falsified documents. Police also noted the use of steroids to alter physical appearance, complicating age verification during rescue.

Nagpur continues to grapple with escalating organized crime. North City segments saw a 181% rise in narcotics-related cases in early 2025, escalating demands on law enforcement. Simultaneously, prostitution-related crimes mushroomed in spas and parlours across multiple zones. These trends cast doubt on whether raids alone can deliver lasting protection. Action must go beyond temporary crackdowns.
