Jadavpur University Stripped of ‘Institute of Eminence’ Tag: A Blow to Its Legacy

In a major setback to one of India’s most respected public universities, Jadavpur University (JU) has officially lost its ‘Institute of Eminence’ (IoE) status — a recognition granted by the Government of India to institutions with the potential to become world-class. The withdrawal has sparked widespread concern in academic circles and reignited debates about institutional reform and government policy.
Jadavpur University was among a handful of public universities shortlisted for IoE status in 2018, a move that promised greater autonomy, funding support, and international collaboration. However, due to prolonged non-compliance with central requirements, internal administrative delays, and lack of financial commitment from the state government, the proposal never materialized into active implementation.
While other institutions moved swiftly to utilize their IoE status to revamp infrastructure, recruit global faculty, and boost research capabilities, JU’s plans remained stalled. Officials from the Ministry of Education confirmed that the status was revoked due to “unsatisfactory progress and inability to fulfill key conditions despite repeated extensions.”
This loss is not just symbolic—it has tangible consequences. Without IoE status, the university misses out on Rs 1,000 crore worth of central funding, the flexibility to introduce foreign collaborations with ease, and the global branding that could have taken it to the next level.

Students and faculty have expressed frustration, blaming both bureaucratic inefficiency and lack of political will. Educationists fear that this may further widen the gap between JU and other central institutions like IITs and IISc that have effectively used their IoE designation to leap ahead.
Unless urgent corrective steps are taken, JU risks losing its place as a leader in public higher education—something that generations of students, teachers, and alumni are deeply proud of.
