India Must Have a Seat at G7 Talks, Says Canadian PM Mark Carney

India’s Growing Global Significance Recognized
In a strong endorsement of India’s rising stature, Carney stated that the country is central to the resilience and diversification of global supply chains. Speaking ahead of the G7 summit, he said that “any serious discussion on the future of global trade, climate policy, and technology must include India.”
He added that India’s large market, strategic geographic position, and growing digital infrastructure make it an indispensable global partner.
Beyond the G20: A Broader Role for India
Carney acknowledged that while India plays a critical role in the G20, its engagement should not be limited to that forum. “The G7 must evolve to reflect new realities. India brings more than just numbers; it brings vision, capacity, and a willingness to lead on issues like climate resilience and global health,” he said.
India’s Supply Chain Strengths Cited
The Prime Minister specifically pointed to India’s role in pharmaceuticals, rare earth elements, and digital technology manufacturing as examples of how India is already shaping global supply networks. He urged other G7 leaders to formally consider mechanisms for regular and structured Indian participation.
Support for Multilateralism and Reform
Carney’s remarks come at a time when global leaders are reassessing multilateral institutions to make them more inclusive. He voiced strong support for reimagining global governance models that can incorporate key voices from the Global South, with India at the forefront.
