Russia Launches Massive Aerial Assault Across Ukraine

Widespread Impact Across Multiple Regions
The assault impacted various regions, including Kharkiv, Kherson, and Dnipro. In Kharkiv, at least three individuals were killed, and 17 others, including two children, sustained injuries. The city’s mayor described the attack as the most powerful since the war’s inception. Kherson witnessed the death of a couple due to shelling, while in Dnipro, two women were injured in separate incidents.
Ukrainian Air Defense Response
The Ukrainian Air Force reported intercepting a significant number of the incoming threats, shooting down 87 drones and seven missiles. Despite these efforts, the attacks caused substantial damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.
Escalation Following Ukrainian Drone Operation
The surge in Russian attacks follows a Ukrainian drone operation that targeted Russian military aircraft at airbases deep within Russian territory. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged retaliation, framing the conflict as an existential issue for Russia.
Stalled Peace Negotiations and Prisoner Exchange Disputes
Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire have stalled, with Ukraine proposing a 30-day ceasefire and a three-way summit involving President Zelenskyy, President Putin, and U.S. President Donald Trump. However, Russia has rejected these proposals, demanding Ukraine withdraw from certain regions and cease Western military cooperation. Additionally, a planned exchange of prisoners of war has been delayed, with both sides accusing each other of stalling the process.
