Chopper Crash Near Kedarnath: Raises Alarm Amid Pilgrimage Rush

Emergency landing near Kedarnath leaves all six onboard safe. But it highlights recurring aviation risks on Char Dham route.
June 7, 2025- A helicopter carrying five Kedarnath-bound pilgrims and a pilot made a dramatic emergency landing on Saturday morning near the Kedarnath Valley. It marked the fourth aviation mishap on the Char Dham Yatra route within the past month. The incident has raised serious questions about aviation safety in one of India’s most high-traffic pilgrimage zones.
The helicopter, operated by Crystal Aviation Private Limited, took off from the Sirsi helipad. One of the three major helipads (Sirsi, Phata, and Guptkashi) that serve pilgrims heading to the Kedarnath shrine. Shortly after takeoff, a technical snag reportedly led the pilot to make a controlled emergency landing on a road near the Badasu area in Rudraprayag district.
According to officials, the pilot acted swiftly, managing to land the chopper safely and avoid a major accident. However, during the landing, the helicopter struck a car parked by the roadside, causing damage but no injuries. All six people onboard, the pilot and five passengers were reported safe. Though the pilot later complained of back pain and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.
Repeated Incidents Raise Alarm
This incident is the fourth helicopter-related emergency on the Char Dham route in just 30 days. And the second such mishap near Kedarnath in less than two weeks. Earlier incidents have also involved emergency landings and technical failures, although, fortunately, there have been no fatalities.
The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have been alerted. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of this latest malfunction. The aviation authorities are expected to conduct a comprehensive review of operating procedures, aircraft maintenance, and pilot preparedness on this heavily trafficked religious corridor.
High-Risk, High-Density Airspace
With approximately 400 helicopter sorties per day during the peak Char Dham Yatra season. The Kedarnath route has become one of the busiest air corridors in the country. The high altitude, unpredictable weather conditions, and mountainous terrain add layers of complexity to flight operations. Making safety measures all the more critical.
Despite the repeated mishaps, flights from Sirsi and surrounding helipads remain operational. With aviation authorities assuring continued vigilance and risk assessment.
A Wake-Up Call?
While the passengers in Saturday’s incident were lucky to escape unharmed, the recurring nature of such events has led to growing unease among pilgrims and locals alike. Experts have called for immediate action to reassess the aviation infrastructure, enhance technical checks, and ensure strict adherence to safety norms for operators flying in the Himalayan region.
As the Char Dham Yatra continues to attract thousands of devotees each day, ensuring the safety of aerial routes remains not just a logistical necessity, but a matter of public faith and trust.
