The Indian government is moving toward initiating Justice Varma impeachment proceedings. This follows a dramatic discovery of unexplained cash at his official residence during a fire incident in March. A top-level judicial inquiry confirmed serious misconduct, prompting urgent government response.

The controversy began on March 14, 2025, when fire services responded to a blaze at Justice Yashwant Varma’s Delhi residence. During cleanup, officials discovered a large sum of cash hidden inside the premises. This triggered immediate concern within the judiciary and government circles.

Within a week, the Chief Justice of India established a three-member panel under the in-house procedure. The panel included Justice Sheel Nagu, Justice G S Sandhawalia, and Justice Anu Sivaraman. Each judge serves as a Chief Justice in different High Courts across the country.
