SEBI Chief Pledges Greater Accountability in Leadership
Newly appointed SEBI chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey has publicly acknowledged a critical lack of transparency at the top levels of the financial regulator. During his first major press address, he emphasized his commitment to SEBI leadership transparency and accountability moving forward.

SEBI Leadership Transparency Reform Announced Amid Past Concerns
Speaking from Mumbai, Pandey admitted that public disclosures from SEBIโs top leadership had been โvirtually non-existentโ before his tenure. He declared that this status quo would not continue under his leadership. Moreover, he promised a proactive approach toward addressing allegations and restoring institutional trust.
Earlier controversies involving former chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch had fueled public skepticism. Reports linked her family to offshore investment funds associated with Adani Group stakeholders. While those claims remain unproven, they severely impacted SEBI’s credibility in 2024.
Independent Committee Formed for Ethical Governance
To address these concerns, SEBI has created a new independent committee. This team will investigate potential conflicts of interest and design a full-proof transparency framework. Additionally, Pandey confirmed that the committee would include legal experts, policy professionals, and investor representatives.
He stressed that this reform is not just symbolic but a structural shift in how SEBI functions. โOur goal is to eliminate all ambiguity from our internal processes,โ he said.
Legacy Challenges Prompt Urgent Action
Pandeyโs call to action comes after widespread criticism from financial analysts and public watchdogs. In August 2024, Hindenburg Research accused SEBI of ignoring irregular offshore holdings within the Adani Group. That report also implied that SEBI’s reluctance stemmed from internal leadership connections.
Although SEBI dismissed those claims, the fallout created a credibility crisis. As a result, Pandeyโs current measures aim to rebuild public confidence and ensure ethical governance going forward.
Structural Changes to Reinforce SEBI Leadership Transparency
The reform will introduce strict disclosure norms for board members and executive leadership. These include declarations of personal and family investments, offshore holdings, and affiliations with corporate entities. Additionally, a mandatory recusal protocol will be enforced in all conflict-prone decisions.
SEBI also plans to make committee findings and compliance reports publicly accessible. According to Pandey, these measures will shift SEBI from a defensive posture to a transparent regulatory model.
Market Reaction and Policy Endorsements
Industry voices welcomed the move. Investment firm heads and policy think tanks praised the urgency and depth of Pandeyโs actions. โTransparency builds confidence, and confidence attracts long-term investment,โ noted Neha Kothari, partner at Mumbai-based GlobalEquity Advisors.
Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry issued a statement supporting SEBIโs steps toward structural reform. They reiterated that a credible market regulator is essential for maintaining investor confidence and global partnerships.
SEBI Leadership Transparency Marks New Era of Governance
The ongoing shift toward SEBI leadership transparency signals a major turning point for Indiaโs financial regulatory framework. By addressing past issues openly and committing to stronger disclosures, Tuhin Kanta Pandey sets the tone for a more accountable and ethical SEBI.
This initiative may well serve as a template for other public financial institutions across India.
