ISRO’s Historic Gaganyaan Mission to Soar by 2027

India’s Gaganyaan mission, aiming to send astronauts into low-Earth orbit using indigenous technology, enters final testing phase with a launch planned for early 2027.

On May 6, 2025, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh revealed that Gaganyaan—the first human spaceflight mission of India—will launch from Indian territory during the initial months of 2027. With this mission India plans to launch Indian astronauts into orbit using its indigenous rockets launched from national territory making a historic step in space exploration for the nation. The Gaganyaan mission has entered its final testing phase as the Human-rated LVM3 vehicle integrates with the Crew Escape System and Crew Module and Service Module before India can join the few spacefaring nations.

Many Years of Planning

ISRO announced Gaganyaan for 2022 so they could launch it when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and multiple technical challenges stopped them from moving forward. The relaunch of the countdown has begun because major systems are operational and astronaut training continues to advance smoothly.

Three crew members of the Indian space program will launch a three-day mission into a low-Earth orbit which extends to 400 kilometers above the surface before their return to Earth.

The Prelaunch Testings

 ISRO has organized three essential test flights beginning with an unmanned mission due to launch later this year until 2027. Two test flights will launch from Shriharikota in 2026 as part of the Gaganyaan mission with the female robot Vyommitra representing human functions in space conditions.

The upcoming tests will serve to optimize support systems and verify orbital functionality before crews embark on spaceflight.

Key Objectives

Its goal is to demonstrate United Nations spacecraft capabilities developed with domestic resources. The validation process establishes performance capabilities of launch vehicles designed to carry humans and crew modules together with their life support systems.

The earliest proof of mission readiness exists for upcoming long-duration missions that may travel to the Moon or space station.

Technology and Systems

Launch Vehicle: The space mission will launch using the modified Human-Rated LVM3 (HLVM3) vehicle which used to be called GSLV Mk III. 

Orbital Module: The spacecraft consists of a Crew Module which supports human crew members and a Service Module which provides support systems. 

Life Support: The advanced Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) will provide oxygen supply to the crew while removing carbon dioxide, maintaining pressure, and controlling temperature.

Crew Escape System: Successfully tested; This tested system provides crew protection from harm during launch emergencies.

Astronaut Selection and Training

Four pilots from the Indian Air Force completed their training regimen in both Indian and Russian educational facilities. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has been selected by the Indian Air Force to become part of Axiom Mission 4 which will launch towards the International Space Station in May 2025. His upcoming experience will equip him for the planned Indian mission which is scheduled to launch in 2027.

Budget and Future Vision

Current Budget: ₹17,500 crore (~$2.32 billion).

Future Plans: The Indian Space Research Organisation has set a target to construct the Bharatiya Antariksh Station before 2035 while planning a mission to send astronauts to the Moon in 2040.

Space exploration missions today serve as the foundation for building a sustainable presence of humans during long periods of residence in space.

Global partnerships

 ISRO has a partnership with Roscosmos to train astronauts and create important elements of the program. 

ISRO has ongoing discussions with NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) in the areas of knowledge exchange and mutual support. 

The Gaganyaan mission marks a revolutionary leap, proven by ISRO’s transformational technology that illustrates India’s growing delivery capability in space science and lunar ambitions. Gaganyaan can change India’s global blue sky position through active strategic planning, careful testing, and partnerships to expand potential for future scientists and dreamers.
