Pakistan ready for ‘neutral investigation’ of Pahalgam attack: Sharif

Sharif claimed that “Pakistan has always condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that he is ready for a ‘neutral investigation’ into the Pahalgam attacks, where 26 people were killed.

“The recent tragedy in Pahalgam is yet another example of this perpetual blame game, which must come to a grinding halt. Continuing with its role as a responsible country, Pakistan is open to participating in any neutral, transparent and credible investigation,” the Pakistani PM said.

Sharif also issued a warning against any attempts to impede or divert Pakistan’s water allocation under the Indus Waters Treaty. Noting that water constitutes a vital “national interest”, Sharif has stated that the Pakistani government will respond robustly and resolutely to any interference, TOI reported.

“Pakistan is ready to defend it’s sovereignty,” Sharif stated.

Sharif’s remarks follow Pakistan defense minister’s statements. Khawaja Muhammad Asif told the New York Times that Islamabad was “ready to cooperate” with any investigation conducted by “international inspectors”.

In an interview with Sky News, Asif also admitted Pakistan’s history of doing “dirty work” for the West. He called it a mistake for which he said Pakistan had suffered.

“You do admit, sir, that Pakistan has had a long history of backing and supporting and training and funding these terrorist organisations,” asked the Sky News host.

“Well, we have been doing this dirty work for the United States for about three decades, you know, and the West, including Britain,” replied Asif.

Who has taken responsibility for the Pahalgam attack?

The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy for the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), had earlier claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam attack. Pakistan has often been accused of providing support and resources to terrorist organizations involved in cross-border incursions.

Indian PM Narendra Modi also pledged to take action against the perpetrators of the tragic Pahalgam attack, saying that India will “pursue the terrorists to the end of the earth”.
