Protesting Teachers in Punjab: Forceful Crackdown Draws Criticism
On Saturday, 5,994 ETT-qualified teachers gathered to demand regularization of their jobs. Police intervened to clear the crowd, and the forceful response drew immediate public backlash.
Images showed officers restraining demonstrators. One particular photo triggered intense online reactions, as it resembled actions widely condemned in past global police brutality cases.
Protesting Teachers in Punjab: Political Leaders and Groups Respond
Former Education Minister Pargat Singh sharply criticized the incident. He compared it to the George Floyd tragedy and accused the government of treating Punjab like a “police state.”
Civil rights groups echoed these concerns. They called the crackdown undemocratic and aggressive. Many unions and teacher associations demanded strict action against the officer involved.
Others argued that instead of silencing dissent, the state must address the employment demands raised by the teachers.
Need for Transparent Policing and Respectful Engagement
Officials claimed the protest disrupted public roads. Still, experts believe the force used was disproportionate and unnecessary.
Observers point out that such incidents show flaws in how public demonstrations are handled. Better communication, fair engagement, and respect for protest rights are essential. Without these, trust in government institutions may continue to erode.
