A fresh controversy has rocked Bandha village. Several locals now face allegations of constructing incomplete homes solely to claim resettlement compensation. These claims are linked to an ongoing coal mining project, which has sparked protests, court petitions, and growing distrust toward officials.

In 2020, Essel Mining and Industries Limited (EMIL) received approval to operate the Bandha coal block. During land acquisition, over 550 families were identified for relocation. By 2023, nearly 4,784 structures qualified for compensation.

However, company officials soon raised alarms. They observed that many homes lacked key features such as windows, doors, or roofing. These incomplete structures raised doubts. Officials suspected that some may have been built hastily to secure monetary benefits under the rehabilitation plan.

Ghost Homes in Madhya Pradesh: Residents File Legal Petitions

The villagers deny all wrongdoing. According to community leader Devendra Pathak, over 40 families have filed legal petitions in the High Court. They aim to prove that their homes are legitimate and were wrongfully flagged.

Many residents claim the process lacked transparency. They state they were not informed about what qualified as a valid structure. Additionally, they argue that the compensation offered was unfair and decided without proper explanation.

Officials Begin Review of Disputed Claims

In response to the mounting backlash, district officials have launched a new investigation. They are revisiting the list of approved structures and verifying the validity of each claim.

This move seeks to ensure fairness while calming tensions. Officials want to avoid penalizing genuine homeowners due to procedural mistakes or lack of guidance. At the same time, they are committed to exposing any false claims if they exist.

The issue surrounding the ghost homes in Madhya Pradesh highlights major policy and communication flaws. When resettlement plans are rolled out without community involvement, confusion and resentment often follow.
