Nagpur Violence: Communal Clashes Erupt Amid Protests

On March 17, 2025, Nagpur witnessed large-scale communal violence following a protest led by Hindu nationalist groups demanding the demolition of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (formerly Aurangabad). What began as a demonstration quickly spiraled into violent clashes between Hindu and Muslim communities, resulting in multiple injuries, property damage, and an indefinite curfew being imposed across several parts of the city.

The controversy surrounding Aurangzeb’s tomb has been a long-standing issue, with right-wing Hindu organizations arguing that his rule symbolized oppression against Hindus. The release of the Bollywood film Chhaava, which portrays Hindu resistance against Aurangzeb, further intensified the communal divide. As tensions rose, counter-protests from Muslim groups led to violent confrontations, including stone-pelting incidents and attacks on law enforcement officers. The situation quickly escalated, forcing police to take drastic measures to control the unrest.

The violence involved members of right-wing groups like the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, who were leading the anti-Aurangzeb protests. In response, Muslim organizations mobilized counter-protests, leading to direct confrontations. The police, caught in the crossfire, faced violent attacks, with at least 34 officers and five civilians reported injured. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis condemned the violence and ordered strict action against those responsible. Over 50 arrests have been made so far.

With an indefinite curfew still in place, authorities are working to prevent further escalation. Intelligence agencies face criticism for failing to anticipate the violence, while the state government is pushing for peace talks between community leaders. As the situation remains volatile, law enforcement is on high alert, ensuring that the city regains stability while legal proceedings move forward against those responsible for the clashes.
