Exam Irregularities In NIFT 2024 Leave Students Frustrated and Demanding Answers

Allegations of grave irregularities and anomalies in the entrance examination to the National Institute of Fashion Technology have emerged, shredding apart the competence of the National Testing Agency. This has disillusioned candidates at the receiving end and, in turn, questioned the integrity of the examination process.

She is an aspirant named Neha Sharma, who prepared meticulously for the NIFT examination, and her case pretty much reflects that of many other students who are feeling, at this juncture, cheated by the turn of events. There are various discrepancies pointed out by Sharma that need the immediate attention of the authorities.

Of these, the first is the unprecedented display of ranks in decimals of NIFT. Insofar as the records go, NIFT rankings have always been whole numbers; hence, the presentation of ranks like 1586.5, something that has never happened before, is extremely abnormal and suspicious. This deviation has definitely created much disbelief and confusion among aspirants vis-ะฐ-vis the accuracy and credibility of the ranking system.

Moreover, the 2024 counselling sessions have shown a very fast filling of seats as compared to the previous years. The seats, especially in highly sought-after programs and campuses, seem to be allocated very fast. According to this anomaly, there may be some potential mismanagement in this seat allocation process, leaving many meritorious candidates without placement and further fomenting suspicion regarding the fairness of the system.

The exam itself was much tougher compared to previous years. Although year-to-year variations in toughness are always expected in competitive exams, this increase in toughness seems disproportionate. This sudden increase in its complexity coupled with the aforementioned rank irregularity is of serious concern to any question of fairness and consistency in the system of evaluation.

These inconsistencies have implications way beyond the credibility of the NIFT entrance test and possibly cast gloom on the future of many a student like Sharma. In gambit are numerous aspirants who have put in considerable time, tremendous effort, and too much resources to make it through this critical examination only to be met with uncertainty and possible unfair treatment.

She has petitioned the Hon’ble Minister of Textiles, Director-General of NIFT, and all concerned authorities to take immediate action on these alarming developments.

  1. Detailed Filtering: A proper filtering in this year’s ranking system should have been done transparently. Delineation of the reason for introducing decimal ranks by the NTA should be paramount. Followed by checking for any errors, corrections should be done on immediate notice to reflect accurate whole numbers.
  2. Seat Allotment Process Inquiry: The seat allotment process in the counseling rounds shall have to be inquired into as to whether all the seats were allotted following established protocols and no discrepancy exists. Any discrepancy should be rectified, and rerun of the counseling sessions may be ordered if necessary.
  3. Review in Examination Difficulty: There needs to be a review of the examination difficulty and the normalization. The review is necessary to ensure that the assessment really tests the abilities of all the applicants. These adjustments have to be changed accordingly to compensate for this unusual spike in difficulty for this year.

Its smooth conduct of the entrance examination and counseling depends a lot on the fairness and transparency of NIFT as an institution. Dealing with these apprehensions in a fast and rightful manner will go a long way to restoring confidence among all its stakeholders once again and maintaining high standards for NIFT.

The way NTA has been managing the NIFT 2024 entrance examination is under severe scrutiny; these discrepancies really need no time to get sorted. Hundreds of students’ futures are at stake, and the NTA should own the responsibility for these discrepancies and ensure fairness and transparency in this examination process.
