MP Swati Maliwal alleges the Delhi government has systematically dismantled the Delhi Commission for Women

Aam Aadmi Party MP Swati Maliwal has written a scathing letter to Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal, accusing the State government of indulging in “systematic dismantling” of the Delhi Commission for Women. Ms. Maliwal, who chaired the DCW till recently, has alleged the government has “systematically demolished the systems and structures built during my tenure”.

Ms Maliwal has pointed out various critical issues, from non-payment of salaries to the staff of DCW to drastic budget cuts, withdrawal of key personnel, and continuance of vacancy in leadership positions. She expressed grave concern over the withdrawal of the women’s helpline number, which was an important resource for distressed women in the National Capital: “โ€ฆ this will render a large number of distressed women helpless.”.

“Systematic dismantling of the Delhi Commission for Women is deeply concerning and poses a huge threat to the very safety and well-being of women and children in Delhi,” Ms. Maliwal had said in her letter. She has urged Chief Minister Kejriwal to intervene immediately and ensure that the DCW’s responsibilities toward women and children are upheld.

During Ms. Maliwal’s chairpersonship, many initiatives were taken to improve the safety and welfare of women in Delhi. Her allegations point to a troubling regression in the progress made during her leadership.

The Delhi Government is yet to respond to Ms. Maliwal’s allegations. It is at a time when the role of DCW in addressing issues related to women’s safety and rights was considered increasingly important. Ms. Maliwal demanded immediate intervention by Mr. Kejriwal and underscored the urgency.

The DCW has been of immense help in working for women’s rights and bringing cases of violence against them and their survivors to justice. Allegations of dismantling of its systems strike at the heart of what the future holds for women’s welfare in the capital.
