Congress tramples Press Freedom, blacklists media outlets ahead of polls

Part of the AICC ban document

In a shocking assault on press freedom, the Indian National Congress party has unjustly blacklisted two prominent news channels – News Live and Time 8 – from covering its events and denied access to its spokespersons. This draconian move, taken under the garb of curbing “tendentious” reporting, is a blatant attempt to muzzle independent media voices ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections.

The edict issued by Mahima Singh, the party’s Communications Coordinator for Assam, is a chilling reminder of the Congress’s long history of stifling dissent and criticism. Ironically, the party that claims to have “founded the democratic principles” in the country is now brazenly undermining the very foundation of a free press.

This authoritarian decree not only deprives the public of their right to access diverse viewpoints but also raises serious concerns about the Congress’s commitment to transparency and accountability. By blacklisting media outlets for their perceived unfavorable coverage, the party is effectively creating an echo chamber where only sycophantic voices are allowed to prevail.

The Congress’s attempt to cast itself as a champion of press freedom rings hollow in the face of this blatant suppression of media freedom. The move is a stark reminder that power, irrespective of the party wielding it, often breeds arrogance and a disregard for democratic norms.

In a functioning democracy, the media’s role as a watchdog and a check on those in power is sacrosanct. By targeting specific outlets, the Congress is sending a chilling message to journalists across the country: toe the line or face the consequences.

This brazen attack on press freedom must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. The Congress’s actions not only undermine the principles of a free and fair election but also erode public trust in the democratic process itself.

As the nation gears up for a crucial electoral battle, it is imperative that all political parties respect the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution, including the freedom of the press. Any attempt to stifle dissenting voices or control the narrative through coercion must be resisted vehemently by all those who cherish the ideals of democracy.

The Congress’s actions serve as a grim reminder that eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. The people of India must remain resolute in their defense of press freedom and hold accountable any party or individual that seeks to undermine this sacred tenet of a free society.
