7 Killed and Several Injured as Fire Tears Through Tarapith Hotel in Birbhum

Seven lives lost and several others critically injured owing to a massive fire that broke out at a hotel in Tarapith, Birbhum in the early hours of Monday, August 17th. The blaze erupted at around 4:30 am on the ground floor of the four-storey hotel, when most guests were asleep.

Many of the guests were reportedly pilgrims who had travelled to Tarapith to offer prayers at the famous Kali temple on the last Monday of the holy month of Shravan. As the fire spread, thick smoke engulfed the upper floors, leaving several guests trapped inside their rooms.

Fire engines were rushed to the spot and firefighters, while police personnel launched rescue operations. The fire was eventually brought under control and several guests were evacuated from the building. The injured were taken to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital, where some were treated for burns and others for smoke inhalation.

The death toll was initially reported at five but was later revised to seven by police. Several others remain critically injured, raising concerns over the possibility of further casualties.

The exact cause of the fire has not been established, yet. Hotel officials and preliminary fire department assessments have pointed to a probable electrical short circuit, with the blaze reportedly starting near the reception area. Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.

The incident has also raised several questions over fire-safety arrangements of hotels in Tarapith, a major pilgrimage destination that attracts large numbers of visitors.

 Thick smoke reportedly spread rapidly through the building, making it difficult for guests to locate exits and escape.

Authorities continue to assess the situation and monitor those undergoing treatment at Rampurhat hospital as the investigation into the fatal fire progresses.
