Bengal’s Massive Mandate: How the BJP Reached 206 and What Went Wrong for Mamata

KOLKATA – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday comfortably crossed the majority mark in West Bengal Assembly polls, leaving everyone stunned. The BJP, which rode the waves of RSS and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s magic, has bagged 206 seats and emerged as the single largest party in Bengal – ending Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule. This will be the first time when BJP will be in power in the Eastern State and the result is set to have seismic political tremors.

The biggest shock of the night was that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost from Bhabanipur, her home turf. The TMC leader was defeated by BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by a massive 15,105 votes. The defeat of TMC’s “Didi” in her own den signified a tough fight for the ruling party in the rest of the state.

Cracking the Trinamool Fortress

The numbers from 2026 reveal a massive shift in the electorate as opposed to 2021. While the BJP proved to be the biggest gainers in the organization standing at 206 seats the TMC suffered a heavy defeat dropping down to 81 seats from the 215 it had grabbed following the 2021 elections. 

Sources also spoke of the “silent” factors that led to the downfall of the TMC. The “Special Intensive Revision” (SIR) of the voter list had left the TMC seething as it claimed up to 90 lakh voters had been left out. The party would be taking up the matter in courts. However, in the plains, the BJP had managed to plug the gaps by consolidating the urban middle class and the tribal belts of Junglemahal.

A New Era and a Vanishing Opposition

Large swathes of the saffron colour painted across the city following the conclusion of the elections on Thursday dominated the mood at the TMC headquarters in Kolkata on Friday. The polls didn’t just exact revenge on the ruling TMC in Bengal, it also effectively put to rest the ‘Third Front’ which sought to vie for political prominence at the Centre. The Left-Congress combine in Bengal was thoroughly routed with the CPI(M) managing a solitary win from Domkal and the Congress bagging two seats — one from Alipore and another from Barasat. The elections have ensured a strictly bipolar battle for power in Bengal and the BJP is the clear heavyweights in the vanquished TMC’s backyard.

He said it was a victory in favour of no fear and in favour of Asol Poriborton (Real Change). Now the BJP will have to grapple with forming a government in the state with very complex socio economic demographics. For West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, it will be a fight for results in courts and a fight for the soul of her party that for the first time in over a decade will be in opposition.
