A political controversy erupted on Wednesday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O’Brien alleged that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar told a party delegation to “get lost” during a meeting at the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in New Delhi. The poll body, however, rejected the claim and accused the TMC leaders of misconduct, triggering a fresh political confrontation ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Brief Meeting Sparks Big Row

According to Derek O’Brien, the meeting between the TMC delegation and the Election Commission lasted only seven minutes. He claimed that the delegation had gone to submit concerns regarding election officials and fairness of the upcoming West Bengal polls.

O’Brien said the delegation presented examples of officials allegedly linked to political parties and raised concerns over transfers after the Model Code of Conduct came into force. He alleged that shortly after presenting their memorandum, the CEC told them to “get lost”, ending the meeting abruptly.

The TMC delegation included MPs Sagarika Ghose, Menaka Guruswamy, and Saket Gokhale. Following the meeting, O’Brien also challenged the Election Commission to release video or audio recordings of the interaction to verify what transpired.

Election Commission Rejects Allegations

The Election Commission offered a sharply different version of events. Sources within the poll body claimed that Derek O’Brien raised his voice and interrupted the Chief Election Commissioner during the meeting. According to these sources, CEC Gyanesh Kumar asked O’Brien to maintain decorum and reminded him that shouting or inappropriate behaviour was not acceptable in a constitutional institution. The Commission denied that any insulting remark like “get lost” was made.

War of Words Intensifies

After the meeting, the Election Commission posted a message on social media emphasizing that the upcoming West Bengal elections would be “fear-free, violence-free, intimidation-free and inducement-free.” The TMC quickly responded, rejecting the claim and reiterating that the delegation had been treated disrespectfully.

The dispute has further escalated tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and the Election Commission, with both sides sticking to their versions of the brief interaction.

Political Tensions Ahead of Bengal Polls

The confrontation comes just ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections, making the controversy politically significant. The TMC has demanded transparency and accountability, while the Election Commission has stressed maintaining decorum and ensuring free and fair elections.

With both sides refusing to back down, the “get lost” controversy is likely to further intensify political tensions in the run-up to the polls.
