West Bengal Voter Rolls Face Fresh Scrutiny as EC Publishes Two More Supplementary Lists
A Massive Cleanup With Real Stakes
West Bengal is preparing to undertake updates to its electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 elections․ More than 60 lakh names are now subject to verification. So far, 42 lakh cases have been cleared by judicial officers; 3 lakh new names have been added to the lists, and the number of adjudicated names stands at 29 lakh.
Why So Many Names Are Being Cut
The officers weren’t just filling in paper work․ They were taking people who have died‚ moved‚ or are on the list multiple times․ Now here’s the rub: More than 40 percent of the names appearing on the most recent lists have been deleted from the site․ That’s a lot, so it’s unclear why they were taken out.
The Digital System Helps and Hurts
Despite the fast pace of technology‚ such as the ability to file appeals online through the ECI Net platform‚ and increased accountability of the process through court oversight‚ some orders have been delayed due to missing electronic signatures․ A fast system‚ but explanation generally lags behind․
Impacts on excluded voters
Those who would be removed could in principle appeal to the tribunals‚ if they knew they could and if the tribunals were actually open to them․
The Bigger Picture
A clean voter roll is valuable‚ but there’s always a risk that deletions are rushed without proper review․ Speeding things up without being transparent erodes trust․ Therefore‚ the appeal process must be visible‚ simple & fast․.
