Gaurav Gogoi Says Assam Poll Battle Is Between ‘Two Congresses’, Not BJP vs Congress

Amid a wave of defections ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi claimed that the BJP in the state has effectively become a regrouping of former Congress leaders. He pointed to recent exits like Bhupen Borah and Pradyut Bordoloi joining the BJP, noting that many such leaders have also criticised the current Congress leadership. Gogoi alleged that several politicians who had earlier damaged the image of the Congress government under Tarun Gogoi are now seeking power and positions within the BJP.
Campaigning in Majuli for Dr Indranil Pegu, Gogoi targeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, arguing that the upcoming election is not a traditional BJP-versus-Congress fight but a contest between two versions of the Congress itself. He described one as being led by Sarma under a BJP banner, driven by personal interests, and the other as a renewed Congress inspired by Tarun Gogoi’s ideals, with new faces emerging. He said the people of Assam will decide which direction they prefer.
