A Big Election Fight in West Bengal: Mamata vs. Suvendu in Bhabanipur

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is getting ready for her biggest election fight yet. The voting will happen in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has announced 291 candidates. Their big goal is to win 226 seats, which is 11 more than they won in the 2021 elections. To get there, Mamata has to face her biggest rival: the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.

In the last election, Mamata fought Suvendu in a rural area called Nandigram and lost. This time, she is refusing to fight there. Instead, she is fighting from her home turf in Kolkata, an area called Bhabanipur. The BJP has decided to make Suvendu Adhikari fight in two places at the same time: Nandigram and Bhabanipur. Since Mamata is not fighting in Nandigram, her party has chosen Pabitra Kar to fight Suvendu there. Interestingly, Pabitra Kar used to be a close helper to Suvendu before switching sides to join Mamata.

The BJP’s Trap: The “Chakravyuh”

A “Chakravyuh” is an ancient term for a military trap that is almost impossible to escape. Political experts believe the BJP is using this exact strategy against Mamata Banerjee. Mamata is the biggest star of her party. Normally, she would travel across all 23 districts of West Bengal to give speeches and help other TMC candidates win. By making Suvendu fight her in Bhabanipur, the BJP wants to scare her into staying home. They want to force her to spend all her time and energy making sure she does not lose her own seat, leaving her no time to help her party in the rest of the state.

The Bhabanipur Battlefield: Why is it Tricky?

Bhabanipur is not a normal Kolkata neighborhood. People often call it a “mini Bharat” (mini India) because so many different types of people live there. About 40% of the voters are non-Bengali businessmen and families (like Gujaratis, Marwaris, Punjabis, and Odias). Another 20% are Muslim voters. The BJP is trying hard to win over the non-Bengali business voters. To fight back, Mamata is speaking Hindi at rallies and offering cheap land to build a Jain temple to keep those voters happy.

Recently, government officials checked the voter lists and deleted over 47,000 names from Bhabanipur. Another 14,000 names are under suspicion. The BJP says these were fake or duplicate voters. Mamata is furious and calls it a giant conspiracy to steal her votes.

Mamata’s War of Words with the Election Commission

Mamata Banerjee is extremely angry with the Election Commission, the independent group that runs India’s elections. Right before the elections, the Commission transferred many top police officers and government workers in West Bengal to different jobs.

Mamata claims the Election Commission is secretly taking orders from the BJP. She said they are moving honest police officers out of the way so the BJP can illegally move bags of cash and weapons before voting day. She boldly stated that her party, fighting for the common people (“Maa, Mati, Manush”), will win, and the leaders in Delhi will fail.

The Unfinished Story: The 2021 Court Case

Hanging over all of this is an old, unfinished argument from the 2021 election. In 2021, Suvendu beat Mamata in Nandigram by only 1,956 votes. Mamata refused to accept this and went to the High Court, claiming Suvendu used bribery and cheating to win.

During the court case, Mamata asked the judge, Justice Kaushik Chanda, to step down because she felt he favored the BJP. The judge agreed to step down but fined Mamata ₹5 lakh for trying to pressure the court. The case was handed to a new judge, but it has completely stalled. There has been no real movement since December 2021. Suvendu’s lawyer says the case is frozen because Mamata has no real proof, and if they brought it up again, the judge would throw it in the trash.
