Modi vs TMC on SIR: Electoral Integrity, Alleged Infiltration and What Comes Next
A Voter List Update Clash is between Modi and TMC.
On March 14, 2026, Narendra Modi at a rally alleged that All India Trinamool Congress was against an electoral roll call called Special Intensive Revision or SIR. He claimed that the party is making attempts to defend infiltrators. Millions of voter records in West Bengal were verified during the revision.
Law enforcement also discovered that there were approximately 58 lakh entries that were suspect. These comprised individuals who had relocated, died or featured more than once in the list.
Due to such review, the number of voters decreased by approximately 7.66 crore to close to 7.08 crore. The reconstitution impacts nearly 70 million voters and can impact the state election of 2026.
Why the Issue Matters
Politics, issues to do with security, and administration of elections are mixed in the revision. The voter check utilized the old voter lists and indicated numerous ones as absent, shifted, deceased or duplicated. Numerous of these reforms occurred in some districts.
The proponents believe that the process makes the voter list clean and fair. Critics feel that a good number of real voters were kicked off. This has transformed this technical exercise into a huge political battle.
What Happens Next
Fake voting can be prevented by having clean voter rolls that enhance better election planning. Real voters are also left without a voice when there are mistakes. This may cause court cases, protests and on ground tension. Courts have now stepped in to check the process.
Complaints will be heard by special tribunals to which people whose names were removed brought forward their complaints. It is not expected that the debate will come to a close. Voter identity, transparency, and fair elections will continue to be the major political concerns in India by 2030.
