West Bengal Gears Up for 2026 Assembly Elections; Senior Officials Conduct High-Level Police Training in Kolkata

As an important preparation of the upcoming West Bengal Legislative Assembly Elections 2026, on Thursday, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, along with senior election authorities such as the Additional CEO, Joint CEO, Deputy CEO, and Special Roll Observer, held an intensive training programme of senior police officials at the Shipping Corporation Building in Kolkata. The training was particularly aimed at high-ranking law enforcers such as Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP), Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP) and Joint Commissioners of Police (Jt. CP), and Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP), who will be very vital in the law and order during the electoral process.

The aim of the programme was to equip the security administration to the smooth and peaceful conduction of elections in a transparent and efficient manner so that the police officers are well aware of their mandates by the Election Commission of India (ECI) guidelines. Election law enforcers detailed the manner in which they are required to operate, the procedures that they are supposed to conduct during the polling, and at what time and where they need to intervene to stop the occurrence of electoral malpractices, as well as the need to coordinate with the police on election matters. It was also devoted to the methods of handling sensitive polling zones, crowd control, implementation of the Model Code of Conduct and quick response in the instance of security threats or violations of the election.

Such training is essential according to the officials because elections in a politically active state like West Bengal need a good coordination between administrative and security agencies. Lessons learned out of past elections were also emphasised in the programme which included better surveillance, rapid redressal systems of complaints, and the use of technology in monitoring polling stations. With such training, which will be done months before the elections timeline, the Election Commission will ensure that the institution is well prepared and minimise chances of violence, malpractice or logistics breakdowns during the 2026 assembly elections.

According to the authorities, the same training programmes will further be implemented in the state so that all the levels of the police force are enlightened on operational clarity and legal awareness to be certain to enhancement of the Election Commission in facilitating free, fair and secure democratic elections in West Bengal.
