Fighting Spam at Scale: Inside Airtel and Google’s 2026 Push to Secure RCS Messaging

Bharti Airtel and Google said it is a new move to combat spam and fraud on mobile messaging, which was announced on March 1, 2026. They are incorporating the network security system of Airtel in the Google RCS messaging service directly. RCS is the new form of SMS that is being used in most Android phones. Hundreds of millions of mobile users are in India. The number of subscribers at Airtel alone is approximately 463 million. Meanwhile, e-payments and internet banking have increased at an extremely rapid pace. This has put messaging fraud on a large scale. Airtel claims that its AI platform has identified approximately 71 billion spam calls and 2.9 billion spam SMS messages to date. That is how solemn the problem is.

The new system operates on a network level. This implies that before the suspicious messages and links are received in your phone, they are checked. It examines trends, the behaviour of senders and suspicious links on a real-time basis. Personal messages will remain encrypted, and business messages can be filtered at a deeper level to prevent fraud. This is beneficial to the users because they will have fewer scam links and fake bank messages. In the case of brands and banks, it will contribute to regaining confidence in mobile messages. Authenticated companies can display their real name and logo, so users feel confident that the message is not fake.

There are concerns too. There is the fear that actual messages may just be blocked accidentally. Other people are concerned with privacy and the amount of information analysed. Nevertheless, this collaboration demonstrates that telecommunications and technological services are now inclined to consider the safety of messaging as a collective responsibility.
