New Town Gets LTM’s Ananda Niketan Tech Hub

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday inaugurated Ananda Niketan, the first phase of LTM Limited’s new Global Delivery and AI Competency Centre at the Bengal Silicon Valley Tech Hub in New Town. LTM, formerly known as LTIMindtree, is a Larsen & Toubro Group technology company. The new campus can accommodate around 5,800 engineers and professionals.

The first phase covers nearly eight lakh square feet across two buildings. LTM said the centre will strengthen its global delivery capabilities and AI-focused operations. Its technology focus will include artificial intelligence, data, cloud and digital engineering. The company also sees scope to develop the facility into a larger technology and innovation hub in the coming years.

The inauguration also brought a fresh expansion proposal. Adhikari announced that the state government would facilitate another 10 acres of land for LTM to establish a data centre. The company had approached the government for the additional land around two months ago. The chief minister said HIDCO had been asked to take the necessary steps.

LTM has already received approval to construct four more towers at the site. L&T Realty is working on the remaining towers, according to chairman and managing director S. N. Subrahmanyan. He indicated that the company expects to expand the campus further.

The project is being presented as more than a technology investment. It is also part of the state’s larger pitch for employment and talent retention. Adhikari urged skilled professionals from Bengal who are working elsewhere in India and abroad to consider returning. He said the government wants to create more opportunities for educated young people and strengthen Bengal’s position as an investment destination.

The chief minister highlighted sectors such as AI, cybersecurity, chip design, automation and digital manufacturing are areas where Bengal could create new opportunities. He also called for closer collaboration between educational institutions and industry to improve employment prospects for young people.

The campus itself has been designed around sustainability. LTM said it incorporates energy-efficient systems, smart building management and water-conservation measures. The project also brought together several L&T Group businesses. L&T’s construction arm executed the project, while its project management and facility management businesses were involved in its development and future operations.

The construction phase itself generated significant employment. Nearly 3,000 workers were engaged at the peak of construction, while the project recorded about 8.5 million safe man-hours, Subrahmanyan said. LTM said the centre will draw on Kolkata’s talent pool and academic ecosystem while creating opportunities for skilled professionals in West Bengal and neighbouring states.

Yet one figure needs context. The 5,800 figure refers to the campus’s capacity, not 5,800 newly created jobs. Actual employment will depend on recruitment and the expansion of operations.

That distinction matters as the government makes employment a central part of its pitch. A large technology campus can create capacity. The real test is whether that capacity translates into stable, skilled careers for Bengal’s workforce.

Ananda Niketan therefore arrives with two promises: technology-led expansion and greater employment opportunities. The proposed data centre and additional towers suggest that LTM’s Kolkata footprint may grow further. Whether that growth can also persuade Bengal’s skilled workforce to build its future here remains the larger question.
