Jacks and Rehan steer late surge as England clinch four-wicket win in Colombo

Under the lights at the R. Premadasa Stadium, the England cricket team kept their composure in a pressure-filled chase to defeat the New Zealand cricket team by four wickets in a crucial Super 8 encounter of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

It was not a one-sided contest but a game of momentum swings, where every partnership mattered and the result stayed uncertain until the final overs.

New Zealand post 159 with fighting knocks

After opting to bat first, New Zealand came out aggressively. Tim Seifert set the tempo with a fluent 35, mixing smart placement with powerful strokes, while Finn Allen attacked the powerplay, clearing the ropes three times in a quick 29.

The middle overs saw Glenn Phillips anchor the innings with a steady 39, ensuring the scoreboard kept moving. However, England’s spinners gradually tightened the grip.

Adil Rashid used his variations cleverly, while Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed chipped in with key wickets to break partnerships at crucial moments. Regular dismissals stopped New Zealand from launching a late assault, and they finished on a competitive but chaseable 159/7.

Will Jacks won the player of the match for the 4th time in T20WC 2026 edition.

Early shock for England

England’s reply got off to the worst possible start. Phil Salt fell early, and captain Jos Buttler departed for a duck, leaving the side rattled at 2/2.

With pressure mounting, Harry Brook steadied the innings with a patient 26, focusing on strike rotation rather than risky shots. Alongside him, Tom Banton counterattacked with a lively 33, finding boundaries at key moments to keep the required rate under control. Their partnership rebuilt belief and brought England back into the contest after the shaky start.

Late fireworks seal it

The match tightened again in the death overs, but England found heroes in unlikely places. Jacks shifted gears brilliantly, striking an unbeaten 32 off just 18 balls with confident boundaries and smart running between the wickets.

At the other end, young Rehan played a fearless cameo, smashing 19 off only seven deliveries, including two towering sixes that stunned the fielders and tilted the game decisively. Their calm finishing touch guided England to 161/6 with three balls to spare, sealing a hard-fought victory.
