Homebound and Stuck! Park Street Metro Fault Disrupts Rush Hour

Kolkata Metro’s Blue Line services were disrupted during Thursday evening’s rush hour after a rake developed a fault at Park Street station, leaving commuters facing delays and partial services across the central stretch. Metro authorities said the affected rake had a problem that prevented normal operations. Services were later restored at around 7.30pm.

The disruption began at Park Street, where the rake reportedly faced difficulty with its doors. The problem brought services to a halt around the Park Street–Maidan–Esplanade stretch. Metro authorities then operated trains in two separate sections: Central–Dakshineswar and Shahid Khudiram–Mahanayak Uttam Kumar.

The timing turned a technical failure into a commuter ordeal. The disruption came as office-goers were making their way home. Crowds built up at several stations, with passengers looking for alternative routes by bus and auto. Some commuters reportedly abandoned the Metro after learning about the disruption at station entrances.

Passenger frustration was also directed at the communication gap. Some commuters told Anandabazar Patrika that they did not receive a clear announcement about the disruption initially. They alleged that the expected arrival time displayed on station boards kept moving back. Some also said they received little clarity when they approached station staff. These remain passenger accounts and have not been independently established as an official finding.

Metro authorities later confirmed that the disruption was caused by rake failure and said efforts were underway to restore normal services as quickly as possible. The partial operation helped keep the remaining sections running while the affected stretch remained suspended. Within roughly half an hour, normal services resumed.

For many commuters, however, even half an hour can feel considerably longer when it arrives at the end of a working day. A Metro journey that normally offers predictability can quickly become a scramble for buses, autos and alternative routes. Crowded platforms add another layer of discomfort.

The incident also raises a familiar question for Kolkata’s busiest public transport system. How much disruption can a network built around daily reliability absorb before a technical fault becomes a city-wide inconvenience?

Breakdowns are inevitable in any large transport system. The greater test lies in what follows: how quickly the fault is isolated, how efficiently services are restored and, perhaps most importantly, how clearly passengers are told what is happening.

Thursday’s disruption lasted only around half an hour. The inconvenience, however, travelled much farther than the failed rake.

For thousands heading home, the evening offered a reminder that in a city where the Metro carries people through some of the busiest corridors, a small failure underground can quickly become a very public problem above it.
