Jadavpur University probe after violent student clash: what campuses must change now

A violent dispute erupted in Jadavpur University on 20 February 2026. Some students were hurt, as well as two teachers. The university promptly established an internal investigation committee and limited access to the university. It is said that the fight involved members of SFI and a separate student group known as WTI as part of actions related to the Internal Complaints Committee. What started out as a disagreement on campus procedures became physical. A fight between two teachers occurred during an attempt to stop it. This was not a one-time event. The university has had internal wrangles and demonstrations in past years. Most of these problems were associated with politics and student movements.

Unresolved issues cause tensions when they are not resolved at an early stage with help of clear systems. Social media makes it worse. There is lightning-fast spreading of posts and rumors, and the level of anger increases before anything can be verified. There are deeper causes too. Campus politics is usually a mirror of bigger party competition out-of-campus. Grievance systems may be said to be slow and, hence, students resort to open protest. There is the strain of mental health and stress and the lack of resources.

Concurrently, universities are increasingly being subject to greater scrutiny by the people and the law in case they do not maintain their campuses as safe. Such acts do not only impact the participants. The issues of safety may damage admissions, research, and funds. They are also the ones that determine the way society perceives the institution. In case the university does not want such tussles to occur, it must have a fair and quick inquiry system, improved support to students, and effective communication. Good leadership and confidence should prevent small conflicts among people from turning into violence.
