RG Kar Parents File Fresh Plea: Seeking Custodial Interrogation of “Conspiracy” Suspects and Police Officers
In August 2024, a young medical student trainee was raped and killed in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The nation was in shock over the crime. One of the civic volunteers, Sanjay Roy, was subsequently arrested, tried, and sentenced to life. Yet the case did not end there.
In February 2026, the parents of the victim made a fresh plea in court. They are sure that the crime was committed not by one individual. They are demanding custodial interrogation—questioning certain individuals while in police custody. According to them, this is needed to know the complete truth.
Their demand is directed toward certain doctors who had night shifts and a police officer who was engaged in the initial phase of the investigation. The parents feel that the initial investigations were too fast in their concentration on one of the accused and did not consider the possibility of a bigger conspiracy.
There were a number of doubts raised. The filing of the First Information Report (FIR) regarding the crime was delayed. Certain documents were also missing. The allegations also included the fact that the crime scene could not have been attended to correctly.
The case was later taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Although it achieved a conviction, the parents claim that there are still key questions that remain unanswered. The case has become an icon for workplace safety and institutional responsibility. The parents claim that they are not after compensation; they want clarity. Depending on the ruling of this new plea by the court, the case might be re-examined to a greater extent. For many, this is about restoring public confidence in the justice system.
