HC Slams Left’s ‘Lawless’ Secretariat Hire

The Calcutta High Court has made a significant observation, stating that the Left Front government’s appointment of a woman in the secretariat without due process was the “height of lawlessness”. The court was reviewing a case where a contractual employee was appointed by a minister without a sanctioned post, and the court ultimately dismissed her plea for reinstatement.
The court emphasized that an individual may perceive themselves as above the law, but a civil society must adhere to the rule of law. The judge also noted that the minister’s action undermined the rule of law and showed “unexplainable favouritism” to the petitioner.
This observation comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the West Bengal government’s recruitment processes, with the High Court previously directing the CBI to probe alleged irregularities in teacher appointments.
