Star Indian Fast Bowler Mohammed Shami Attends SIR Voter‑List Hearing in Kolkata, Says He Faced No Issues and Urges Others to Cooperate
Shami Appears for SIR Hearing in Kolkata
Indian cricket star Mohammed Shami attended a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) voter-list hearing in Kolkata on January 20, 2026. Officials had flagged irregularities in his voter registration form. Shami personally submitted all required documents, including his passport, at the Bikramgarh hearing centre.
Shami, a long-time resident of Kolkata and a domestic player for Bengal, registered as a voter in Ward No. 93, under the Rashbehari Assembly constituency. Both he and his brother, Mohammed Kaif, received notices from the Election Commission for the SIR process.

Missed Earlier Hearing Due to Cricket Commitments
Shami missed his first hearing because he was playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Rajkot. Election officials rescheduled his appearance for January 20. The hearing lasted about 15 minutes, after which Shami spoke to the media.
Shami Praises the Process and Urges Cooperation
Shami said the process was smooth and straightforward. He encouraged citizens to participate in the SIR process to ensure accurate voter lists. “There was no problem. SIR is not something that will harm you,” he said. He also emphasized that voters should respond to official notices and correct any discrepancies in their forms.
Public Importance of SIR Hearings
The SIR process has faced scrutiny and protests in some parts of West Bengal. Citizens have expressed concerns over procedural delays at local hearing centres. However, Shami’s positive experience sends a strong message. His endorsement highlights that voter-list updates are routine, safe, and important for every citizen’s civic responsibility.
