Iran Faces Nationwide Internet Blackout as Protest Intensify

Iranian authorities have imposed an internet shutdown as protests over rising prices and economic pressure continue to grow across the country. The disruption, which began on January 9, has cut off access to international websites and messaging platforms, making it difficult for people to communicate, share updates, or coordinate demonstrations.

The protests first surfaced in late December, triggered by frustration over inflation, unemployment, and lower standards of living. It began in major urban centers, including Tehran, which further spread to dozen of cities and towns, marking one of the most widespread waves of unrest in Iranian history. While initial protest focused primarily on economic demands, the slogans and placards display deeper political discontent.

In response to the protest, security forces have made tightened controls and arrests, which has led to reported casualties and detentions, according to the rights groups, however exact numbers of injuries or deaths remain unclear due to limited reporting and internet restrictions. Iranian officials have claimed that foreign entities and misinformation are influencing the protests, describing the internet shutdown as a temporary measure to maintain public order, while denying excessive force.

At the same time, demonstrators are voicing demands for both economic relief and greater governmental accountability. The international community, including human rights organizations and several foreign governments, has expressed concern over the use of force against the protestors and the nationwide internet restrictions, urging the protection of freedom of expression, access to information and civilian safety while calling for restraint from all sides.
