TMC MPs Detained While Protesting in Delhi Today

New Delhi, January 9, 2026— Several senior leaders of Trinamool Congress (TMC) were detained by the Delhi Police today while staging a protest in front of the Office of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital. The protest turned tense as police moved in to remove them, and leaders like Mahua Moitra and Derek O’Brien were taken into custody around mid-morning.

What led to the Protest

TMC MPs had gathered outside the Home Minister’s office to oppose recent raids by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) at the Kolkata offices of political consultancy I-PAC. The raids also occurred at the house of one of its co-founders. These raids took place a day earlier, triggering sharp political reactions.

The leaders stated that the ED’s actions were politically motivated. According to them, these actions were intended to harm the party ahead of the upcoming West Bengal elections. They carried placards and shouted slogans against the central government, accusing it of using agencies unfairly during election time.

What Happened at the Site

What started as a peaceful protest later intensified when police asked the MPs to move. When leaders stayed on the road, police began to clear the crowd. Delhi Police officers were seen lifting leaders, including Mahua Moitra and Derek O’Brien, and escorting them into police vans.

One video from the scene showed O’Brien saying to journalists, “Why are we being detained? Look at this.” after he was taken away. The detained MPs were taken to the Parliament Street police station for processing.

TMC Leaders Speak Out

During the protest, Mahua Moitra said the party will continue to fight and alleged misuse of central investigative agencies. She said the ED was sent to “steal our party’s political and strategic information.”

Another TMC MP, Satabdi Roy, claimed that central agencies are used selectively during elections to help one party win.

Government and ED Response

So far, the Enforcement Directorate has defended its actions in Kolkata, saying the searches were based on evidence and carried out under the law. Therefore, the agency has denied targeting any political party and says the raids are part of normal investigations under financial laws.

TMC leaders have already said they may stage further demonstrations and demand answers from the government.
