Patna : Dr Nusrat Parveen, the AYUSH doctor at the centre of a high-profile controversy, finally joined her government service on January 7, 2026, exactly 23 days after the incident that sparked nationwide debate.

The controversy began on December 15, 2025, during an appointment letter distribution ceremony at the Bihar Chief Minister’s Secretariat. While handing over her appointment letter, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar pulled down Dr Parveen’s hijab, asking “What is this?” The video went viral, triggering sharp criticism from opposition parties, civil society, and political figures across states, who viewed it as an infringement on personal and religious rights.

Initially scheduled to join duty on December 20 at Sabalpur Primary Health Centre in Patna Sadar, Dr Parveen did not report. Amid speculation that she might decline the post due to the incident, the Bihar government extended the joining date to December 31 and later gave a final extension till January 7, marking her last opportunity to report for duty.

Facing mounting administrative pressure, she completed her joining formalities directly at the AYUSH department bypassing the usual route via the Patna Civil Surgeon’s office. Officials confirmed her posting, ending weeks of uncertainty. She is also pursuing post-graduation at Government Tibbi College and Hospital in Patna.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari had offered her a job with better pay and assurances of dignity, but Dr Parveen opted to join in Bihar.

The development closes a chapter in the row, though it highlighted debates on women’s autonomy and religious expression in public service.
