Indigo flight cancellation crisis

December 6th 2025 : Indigo is having a hard time adjusting to the severe disruption of the nation’s aviation network which is essentially a major optional breakdown. Flight cancellations have increased nationwide in just the last 4 days, stranding thousand of travellers and exposing more CDS problems with the airline’s scheduling system
The sudden pressure created by flight duty time limitations is the root cause of the crisis. FDTL is a safety rule which governs how many hours pilots and cabin crew members are allowed to work if they do not face problems in their regular life or during the flight time. Though these updated rules were officially published in January 2024 Indigo did not fully adjust its roster for almost 1 year. When the rules finally began to take effect this week a large number of Indigo Pilots closed their maximum duty hours forcing the airline to ground many flights all at once.

This was not a problem other airlines faced since they had already adjusted to the new schedule. For too long Indigo had been on an expansion about profit overdrive. To keep crosses in check the airline works on very tight crew planning and low buffers for rest. But as delays started building over the last four days several Pilots became unable under FDTL limits.
This explains why airports across India reported heavy cancellations โ€” 19 in Ahmedabad, 6 in Thiruvananthapuram and major disruptions in Pune, where 16 arrivals and 16 departures were cancelled along with one diversion to Hyderabad. These are not isolated incidents but a chain reaction caused by the shortage of crew. In the past 4days, 1000+ flights were cancelled nationwide.

To keep things in order, the DGCA has given IndiGo a one-time temporary exemption from certain night-duty and FDTL limits for its A320 fleet until February 10, 2026. This shall be considered a mitigation to help the airline stabilize operations. In return, IndiGo needs to submit regular reports every 15 days on crew utilization, indicate the improvements being made, and furnish a 30-day action plan to get back to full compliance. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced a host of consumer support measures including automatic refunds for cancelled flights, hotel accommodations for stranded travelers, lounge facilities for senior citizens, and refreshments for those stuck in long delays.

A 24ร—7 control room has been activated to monitor the situation closely, and the airports have put extra staff to bear the sudden crowd pressure. Reactions have also come from the political quarters. Congress MP Dr Mallu Ravi said heavy dependence of the country on one private airline has made the aviation system vulnerable, and situations such as this lay bare structural weaknesses. The government has now ordered a high-level inquiry into the reasons behind this nation-wide disruption and to recommend long-term solutions so that such incidents do not repeat in the future.
