Voice of Sovereignty: India Reacts to Shanghai Detention

The alleged arbitrary detention and harassment of an Indian citizen have triggered a fresh diplomatic clash between India and China. The dispute centres on China’s refusal to recognise the Indian state as legitimate territory. The issue has now affected an Indian passport holder in transit.

The incident took place at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, involving Prema Wangjom Thongdok, a UK-based Indian citizen. She was allegedly detained for nearly 18 hours because her valid Indian passport listed her birthplace as Arunachal Pradesh. As a result, the national authorities from both countries have issued firm, yet contrasting, statements.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs took a stance, lodging a “strong demarche” with Beijing. It addressed the matter in both New Delhi and at the Indian Embassy in China.

MEA Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal condemned the incident. He said, “Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India, and this is a self-evident fact. He further added that no amount of denial by the Chinese side is going to change this indisputable reality.”

Jaiswal stressed that China’s actions were “in violation of several conventions governing international air travel”. He also mentioned that it even contradicts China’s own regulations allowing visa-free transit for up to 24 hours.

On the other side, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson, Mao Ning, denied any harassment or detention. She further defended the border inspection authorities’ actions as lawful.

“Zangnan is China’s territory. The Chinese side has never recognised the so-called ‘Arunachal Pradesh’ illegally set up by India”, said Mao Ning.

China rejected India’s account of harassment and detention. It claimed that the incident was a routine border check that confirmed their geopolitical stance on the region.

Nonetheless, for the people of Arunachal Pradesh, the incident was not merely a diplomatic spat. But a deeply personal affront that questioned their very identity and citizenship. The emotional resonance of the incident has been powerful, leading to widespread protests and an outpouring of solidarity.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed “deep shock” and called the incident “appalling” and a “racial mockery.” He stated that the issue concerns the dignity of every Indian citizen.

Prema Wangjom Thongdok, took to social media to share her ordeal. Prema said, “My birthplace is on a valid Indian passport, and no foreign nation has the right to invalidate my nationality based on its own expansionist fantasies.” She publicly thanked her supporters and addressed critics.

Civil society organisations and student unions in Itanagar, Tawang, and other towns organised spontaneous protests. They termed it a defence of the “dignity of the Arunachali people.” For many, the incident re-ignited the historical pain of China’s cartographic aggression.

While appreciating the MEA’s swift demarche, many demanded stronger, visible action from the Central Government. They stated their demands towards the protection of citizens from the state. This includes putting an end to the “stapled visa” practice and firmer diplomatic countermeasures against China’s persistent claims. The incident has thus solidified the unwavering sense of belonging to India among the public.
