Illegal Gambling Den Raided in Pune’s Charholi: ₹1.7 Lakh in Cash Seized

On the night of August 30, 2025, Pune’s Pimpri-Chinchwad Crime Branch raided an illegal gambling den operating out of a rented room in Burde Vasti, Charholi. Acting on a precise tip-off, the police detained 27 men found playing high-stakes games. While police arrested the majority on the spot, three suspects, including the den operator, managed to escape. Among those arrested were repeat offenders with pending cases under the Maharashtra Gambling Act. Police also confirmed that at least three detainees were local political workers, some of whom used their connections to keep the den shielded from regular patrols. Equally telling was the inclusion of farmers and small-scale traders from nearby villages. Investigators believe many of them were lured by the promise of quick returns, especially during a time when agricultural uncertainty and rising costs have put financial strain on rural families. For the traders, gambling may have appeared as an escape from economic stagnation, but in reality, it deepened their vulnerability to debt and extortion.

Police sources also hinted that some of the accused were middlemen who acted as links between gamblers and organizers, earning commissions on both the bets and the protection money. This blend of repeat criminals, struggling farmers, grassroots politicians, and local businessmen revealed how the gambling economy had become a shadow ecosystem that fed on desperation as well as ambition.

Police received a tip that gambling was happening nightly in a rented room at Burde Vasti. They monitored activity patterns, noting who came and went. On raid night, officers surrounded the building, intercepted all exits, and found players caught red-handed. Vehicles and mobile phones were immediately impounded as evidence.
