BCCI Elections Hang in Balance as Ministry and Board Clash Over Governance Act

22 August-Kolkata, India: According to sources from the sports ministry, the Indian cricket organisation, BCCI, will hold its highly anticipated elections in September, and it will comply with the Supreme Court-approved regulations of the Lodha Committee if the new legislation’s regulations are not announced by then.

However, the Sports ministry would prefer to hold the elections in accordance with the National Sports Governance Act.

Although the ministry hopes to announce the comprehensive rules and regulations for the bill’s implementation considerably sooner, they plan to complete the bill’s implementation within the following six months.

The sources stated, “Ideally, the act should govern the holding of the elections, but if the authorities do not notify the rules in time, they may proceed according to the Lodha Committee recommendations.”

The sources further added that “Once the rules are notified, all NSFs, including the BCCI, will have to hold elections as per its norms.”

Roger Binny hopes to remain as BCCI prez

The new act allows only individuals aged between 70 and 75 to run for the BCCI office if the international governing body’s bylaws and statutes permit it, even though the Lodha Committee has already set the age recommendations at 70. The ICC’s rules for office-bearers do not have an age limit.

The current BCCI president and Indian cricket legend, Roger Binny, hopes to rerun and remain as the BCCI president even though his tenure ended after he turned 70. But as of yet, the BCCI Board has not named a temporary president.

The board will hold the elections in the last week of September during the Annual General Meeting.
