SC to Delve into Indian Super League Controversy on Friday

18 August-Kolkata, India: In a significant development for the fans of the Indian Super League (ISL), the Supreme Court of India has agreed to hear all the cases and the arguments on Friday, August 22. The bench led by Justice PS Naramsimha heard the case after senior advocate and amicus curiae Gopal Sankaranarayanan mentioned it on Monday.

The All-India Football Federation (AIFF) notified parties on Monday that it would not be taking the issue of All India Football Federation vs. Rahul Mehra and Others to the Supreme Court, following a purported reversal of course. But the amicus curiae, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, responded to the issue by alerting every member that he would bring the matter to the court by himself.

Supreme Court on the crucial decision of ISL

When December approached, the expiration of the 15-year-old Master’s Rights Agreement between AIFF and FSDL made the matter urgent. The expiration of the contract already puts the survival of Indian football, especially major leagues like the Indian Super League (ISL), in danger because FSDL manages the league.

The court’s ruling about the AIFF’s constitutionality has placed the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement between the AIFF and FSDL on hold. The court in April raised significant doubts about the forthcoming season by barring the AIFF from signing new commercial contracts.

Supreme Court holds the future of ISL

Although the deal helped shape ISL into what it is now, clubs have halted operations and frozen pay in anticipation of the agreement’s possible expiration, casting doubt on the league’s future.

The Supreme Court’s crucial intervention may be the pivotal point in deciding the Indian Super League’s destiny. Earlier, the AIFF promised the clubs and the fans that they would try their level best to bring ISL back in front of the Supreme Court, but they backed out at the last moment.

In a controversial statement, the AIFF said, “The legal representatives of the All-India Football Federation and the Indian Super League clubs held a discussion on Thursday. All parties agreed that they will convey the concerns of the ISL clubs about the delay in the commencement of the 2025-26 ISL season, and the hardship that the players and other stakeholders are feeling, to the Supreme Court next week.”
