Police Probe Bhiwandi Double Murder, Arrests Pending

On August 12, 2025, a shocking double murder occurred outside the office of BJP leader Praful Tangadi and his cousin Tejas Tangadi in Khardi village, Bhiwandi. Both men were ambushed by four to five masked assailants wielding swords and sharp weapons. Despite a relativeโs attempt to rush them to a nearby hospital, both were declared dead on arrival.
Police Investigation
Authorities launched a strong investigative push immediately after the double murder in Khardi village, Bhiwandi, on August 12, 2025. Investigators formed six dedicated teams to manage specific tasks ranging from crime scene analysis and witness interrogation to the scanning of digital evidence purchased before the attack. These teams now coordinate with the Local Crime Branch to ensure a focused and efficient process.
Police have relied heavily on CCTV footage retrieved from the vicinity of JDT Enterprises, where the attack unfolded, to trace the attackersโ escape routes and pinpoint their likely residences. Early footage includes glimpses of masked figures fleeing the scene. Officers also canvassed the neighbourhood, urging anyone with relevant video recordings or phone footage taken by bystanders to come forward.
Meanwhile, investigators are probing the history of friction over property holdings between the Tangadi family and associates of the prime suspect, identified as Vicky Mhatre. Records show Mhatre had assaulted Praful Tangadi previously, prompting concern from family members that authorities did not intervene decisively. That gap now seems critical. Police are questioning local witnesses and canvassing records to reconstruct event timelines, including interactions before the murder.
FIRs have been registered against 12 individuals, among them Mhatre. Officials are leaning on witness statements and digital trails, bank records, mobile data, and previous complaints to build a clearer motive.
Political Fallout and Criticism of Police Inaction
This incident triggered a wave of anger from BJP workers, with MLA Mahesh Chougule urging swift justice and the family appealing directly to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Underlying the outrage is criticism of alleged police inaction after a prior assault on Praful. The family argues that meaningful intervention at that stage might have prevented the escalation. The murky lines between personal vendettas and political influence now complicate public trust in law enforcement.
