Air India Halts Delhi–Washington Direct Flights from September Amid Fleet Crunch

Air India will stop operating its nonstop flights between Delhi and Washington, D.C., from September 1, 2025, as the airline faces a shortage of wide-body aircraft. The decision follows an ongoing fleet retrofit program and operational challenges linked to the closure of Pakistani airspace.

Fleet Shortage Drives the Decision

Air India currently operates 26 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, but several aircraft remain grounded for an extensive retrofit program. The $400 million upgrade aims to improve seating, cabin interiors, and in-flight entertainment systems. Because of this, the airline has fewer planes available for long-haul services, forcing it to temporarily reduce some routes.

Pakistani Airspace Closure Adds Pressure

The continued closure of Pakistani airspace has increased travel times and fuel costs for India–U.S. flights. Since April 2025, carriers have had to reroute via longer paths, creating additional strain on schedules. Air India officials confirmed that this factor has added operational complexity, making nonstop Delhi–Washington flights harder to sustain at this time.

Alternative Options for Passengers

Air India will contact all affected passengers directly. The airline will offer rebooking on one-stop flights via New York, Newark, Chicago, or San Francisco, in partnership with United Airlines, Alaska Airlines, and Delta Air Lines. Travelers can also request full refunds if they choose not to travel on an alternate route.

North American Network Remains Strong

Despite the suspension of the Washington service, Air India will continue nonstop flights to other North American destinations, including New York, Newark, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, and Vancouver. Airline executives emphasized that this change does not signal a withdrawal from the U.S. market but rather a temporary adjustment.

Long-Term Plans Stay on Track

Air India’s management reiterated that the suspension will last only until the retrofit program finishes and the fleet returns to full strength. The upgrade project, part of the airline’s transformation under the Tata Group, aims to enhance reliability, passenger comfort, and competitiveness on international routes.

Commitment to Service Quality

Air India has stated that it remains committed to delivering high-quality service on its remaining routes. Officials believe that the current sacrifices will lead to long-term benefits once the upgraded aircraft return to service. The airline also plans to expand frequencies to other U.S. destinations to meet demand during this temporary suspension.
