Ter Stegen’s Future in Jeopardy as Barcelona Takes Legal Action

August 6-Kolkata, India: German goalkeeper and a part of the 2015 Barcelona’s treble-winning squad Marc Andre Ter-Stegen is fighting a legal battle in court against his current club, La Liga powerhouse FC Barcelona, after reports emerged that the Catalan giants were considering suing him.

The dispute started after the 33-year-old German goalkeeper refused to sign his medical data consent form, which La Liga will submit.

The Main Problem With Ter Stegen

On July 29, doctors performed surgery on the lower back of Marc Andre Ter Stegen. FC Barcelona now expects him to be sidelined for at least the next four to five months. They also wanted to get rid of him, so they extended Wojciech Szczesny’s contract and hired Joan García from their rivals Espanyol as their new number one goalkeeper and his replacement.

Ter Stegen’s dispute with Barcelona

The new German number 1 goalkeeper, however, believed he could return within three months. According to sources, Ter Stegen targets the Germany goalkeeper post at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and wants to keep competing for Barcelona’s top goalkeeper spot.

However, the main issue that remains is that the Catalan giants can remove Ter Stegen from the starting line-up if they can show that the German keeper will not be available for the next four months. In accordance with La Liga’s injury clause and financial fair play rules, they can also utilise at least 50% of their pay to sign new players.

But Ter Stegen refused to sign the medical consent form, which also led to the current Barcelona sporting director and Portuguese football legend Deco, who tried to talk with him, but they couldn’t locate him.

Media Outlets on the issue

A few famous media outlets reported that the Catalan giants have instituted disciplinary action against the 33-year-old German keeper, but ESPN has denied the reports. As per ESPN, Barcelona is considering its legal options and could impose a fine on the player.

FC Barcelona is planning to sell Marc Andre Ter Stegen after he decided to undergo surgery on July without the club’s consent. The current president, Joan Laporta, has also highlighted the issue and said, “the most direct path to register new signings García and Marcus Rashford was to do it through La Liga’s emergency injury rule. But they will only be able to use it if they can prove Ter Stegen’s unavailability.”
