BJP Targets Priyanka Gandhi for Defending Rahul After SC Remarks
New Delhi: A political storm has erupted after Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made strong remarks defending her brother Rahul Gandhi, following the Supreme Court’s rebuke over his Bharat Jodo Yatra comments. The BJP has reacted sharply, announcing plans to file a contempt of court petition against her, accusing her of making “irresponsible statements” about the judiciary.
What Happened?
The controversy began when the Supreme Court questioned Rahul Gandhi’s remarks made during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in December 2022. While the court stayed proceedings against him in a Lucknow court, it asked why he made sensitive statements outside Parliament.
“If you are a true Indian, you won’t say such a thing,” said a bench led by Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih.
This led to Priyanka Gandhi responding with criticism at the Parliament House complex, defending her brother and questioning the judiciary’s authority to define patriotism.
Priyanka Gandhi’s Statement
“With due respect to the honourable judges of the Supreme Court, they do not decide who is a true Indian. That is the job of the opposition leader. It is his duty to ask questions and to challenge the government.”
She also clarified that Rahul Gandhi has never disrespected the Army, insisting that his comments were misinterpreted.
BJP’s Reaction
BJP MP Manan Kumar Mishra called Priyanka Gandhi’s remarks a “blatant contempt of court,” stating that the BJP, along with members of the Bar, would be filing a petition.
“She has been making irresponsible statements without even understanding what the Court meant. The public will not tolerate this,” said Mishra.
Congress Pushback
Senior Congress leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and K.C. Venugopal stood by Rahul Gandhi, calling the SC’s remarks “unwarranted” and emphasizing his right to question the government on national issues.
