Man Out on Bail for Rape Shoots Survivor in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar

Survivor Shot While Returning Home
A 30-year-old woman was shot in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar on Wednesday night while returning from work. She was in an auto-rickshaw near Munirka flyover when two men on a bike intercepted her. One of them, Abuzair Safi, fired at her from close range, hitting her in the chest. Despite the injury, she stayed conscious and called for help. Police arrived quickly and took her to AIIMS Trauma Centre. Her condition is stable.
Accused Was Out on Bail
Safi was out on interim bail in a rape case the woman had filed in 2024. Police said he had been trying to contact her, but she refused to respond. Frustrated, he started tracking her movements. He waited for an opportunity and carried out the attack when she was alone.
Police Arrest Both Accused
Police used CCTV footage and local sources to track the attackers. They arrested Aman Sukhla, the bike rider, on Thursday and caught Safi the next day. Police recovered the motorcycle and the country-made pistol used in the shooting. Safi confessed during interrogation.
FIR Filed; Investigation Ongoing
A case was registered at Vasant Vihar Police Station under sections for attempt to murder, conspiracy, and the Arms Act. Police are checking Safi’s phone records and CCTV footage. Officials believe the attack was planned. More arrests may follow if new leads emerge.
Rape Complaint Filed in 2024
The survivor had accused Safi of rape, intimidation, and physical assault in 2024. He was arrested but later granted bail. Police said he used the bail period to pressure her into withdrawing the complaint. When she refused, he allegedly threatened her. The attack followed soon after.
Public Anger Over Bail Misuse
The case has sparked outrage and debate over the granting of bail in serious crimes. Activists and lawyers are demanding stricter bail rules in rape cases. The Delhi Commission for Women has taken note and asked for a report. Meanwhile, the survivor remains under medical care, with police providing extra protection.
