Grief-Stricken Piplodi: A Rajasthan Village Reels from School Tragedy, Seven Funerals Shatter Families

Piplodi, Rajasthan – July 31, 2025

A pall of profound grief hangs heavy over Piplodi village in Rajasthan’s Jhalawar district, as its close-knit community grapples with an unimaginable tragedy. Just days ago, on Friday morning, the roof of a government school caved in during morning prayers, claiming the lives of seven innocent schoolchildren and leaving 15 others critically injured. The village, usually bustling with the laughter of children, is now a site of seven funerals and countless shattered families.
The devastating incident occurred at the Government Upper Primary School in Piplodi, where students had gathered for morning prayers. Preliminary reports suggest that incessant heavy rainfall in the region over the past few weeks may have compromised the structural integrity of the old building, leading to its sudden collapse. Witnesses recounted horrifying scenes of dust, debris, and the screams of trapped children, as villagers rushed to the site to frantically pull out the young victims.
Among the deceased are siblings Meena (12) and Kanha (7), whose parents are inconsolable, having lost both their children. Their bodies were consigned to a single pyre, a heart-wrenching symbol of their shared fate. Other victims included Kundan (10), Harish (11), Payal (13), Kartik (8), and Priyanka (12) from a nearby village. Many of the injured are still battling for their lives in various hospitals, while others have been discharged with physical and emotional scars that will last a lifetime.
The tragedy has sparked outrage and a fierce demand for accountability. Locals had reportedly raised concerns about the dilapidated condition of the school building multiple times, but their warnings allegedly went unheeded. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken serious note of the incident, issuing notices to the state government and the Jhalawar Superintendent of Police, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
In the immediate aftermath, five school staff members, including the principal, have been suspended for alleged negligence, and an FIR has been filed. The Rajasthan government has announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh to the bereaved families and pledged to rebuild the school in a safer location, with plans to name new classrooms after the deceased children. However, for the grieving families of Piplodi, no amount of compensation can fill the void left by their lost little ones. The village now faces a long and arduous journey towards healing, forever marked by the day it witnessed seven funerals and the shattering of its collective spirit.
